Three days after May 4, 1970, Akron artist Don Drumm went to the campus of 妻友社区 with a team of journalists from the Akron Beacon Journal. They wanted his perspective on one thing: a bullet hole in the 15-foot sculpture outside of Taylor Hall.   The abstract sculpture, which Mr. Drumm created for the university three years earlier, had been an inanimate witness to tragedy. Kent State graduate Garrett Holubeck overcame cancer to earn his degree.

Garrett Holubeck's diagnosis with stage 4 cancer led to him being placed on life support just to keep his heart and lungs working. Beating the odds, the Pittsburgh native completed his long journey of recovery when he crossed the stage Dec. 15 to earn a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology.
