妻友社区 is preparing to comply with a new state requirement that will make all undergraduate course syllabi publicly accessible online, without requiring a login, beginning in Fall 2026.
The mandate, part of recent state legislation, requires all Ohio public universities to create searchable, public-facing websites where anyone can view course syllabi for undergraduate programs. The requirement aims to increase transparency about what is being taught in Ohio's public higher education institutions.
"We're committed to meeting this requirement while maintaining the quality and integrity of our academic programs," said Melody Tankersley, executive vice president and provost. "We're currently consulting with other Ohio universities to identify best practices and ensure we implement this in the most effective way possible."
Posting all syllabi online is one of several Senate Bill 1 mandates, which university leaders estimate will cost $1.5-2 million to implement.
What Will Be Required
Under the new law, each undergraduate course syllabus must include:
- The instructor's name and professional qualifications
- A calendar outlining materials and topics to be covered throughout the semester
- Required or recommended readings
All syllabi must be accessible through a searchable website that doesn't require users to log in. Universities will also be required to submit annual compliance reports to the state chancellor.
Implementation Timeline
Kent State has until Fall 2026 to fully implement the system. The university is currently exploring software options to manage the workflow, search functionality, and reporting requirements.
"We're taking a thoughtful approach to this implementation," Tankersley noted. "We're working to determine the specific details of what needs to be included on the public-facing website and developing workflows to ensure ongoing compliance."
The university is also coordinating with other Ohio institutions to share resources and strategies for meeting the requirement efficiently and effectively.
Moving Forward
Over the next year, Kent State will continue developing the technical infrastructure and administrative processes needed to support the syllabus transparency requirement. Faculty will receive guidance and support to ensure smooth implementation of the new system.
